How to store manicure tools

From scissors and a cuticle pusher to tweezers and nail clippers, the sharp tools you use for nail care need to be stored properly. Therefore, our topic today is how to store manicure tools.

Most girls believe that, in principle, for home use, it’s enough just to throw all the accessories into a cosmetic bag and periodically wipe them before a manicure. However, for safe and professional nail care, it is essential that your metal tools are kept in optimal condition, especially those with sharp edges. If your tools become blunt, they are more likely to damage the skin, or force you to put in a lot more effort to achieve the same results while sharp tools will help you make the whole job easier and more efficient.

Over time, tools will wear out with use, and poor storage practices can only exacerbate this. Instruments should be stored in a neat, closed container to avoid future damage and contamination. Try to use the protective caps that come with the tools to protect the sharp tips and be careful not to drop them.

Of course, all manicure tools must be thoroughly disinfected, regardless of whether you use them at home or come to the salon for a procedure. I told you about how to properly sterilize manicure tools at home in one of my previous articles.

Properly performed, disinfection of instruments should not cause premature blunting. If you are using a sterilizing solution for instruments, then place a piece of cotton wool in the bottom of the glass jar so as not to dull the sharp edges. Opt for high quality stainless steel instruments to avoid rusting during sterilization and disinfection.

Cuticle pusher

A good piece of advice I once received from a more experienced colleague was about sharpening and fitting the cuticle pusher. If your cuticle pusher is not made to a high standard, worn or dull, you can sharpen it using a 150 grit file.

If the tool is too wide or square, you can also shape the corners of the pusher to your liking. Do this regularly to keep your tools in top condition, depending on how often you use them.

Often, sharpening of manicure tools is offered by the manufacturer, so you should pay attention to such a service.

If you are using a cuticle pusher when removing nail accessories (like rhinestones), then resist the temptation to use the same tool on your own cuticle, as it will clog and dull and therefore be ineffective.

Cuticle nippers

Cuticle nippers are designed to remove dead tissue, cuticle defects, and burrs. High-quality tongs come in a variety of sizes, and most are made from stainless steel, making them strong, durable, and easy to sanitize.

Sharpening cuticle nippers can be offered by the manufacturer, or by special craftsmen who serve exactly manicure tools. You should not try to sharpen the wire cutters with knife sharpeners, etc., otherwise you simply risk ruining the tool.

It is best to store nail clippers in a separate case, which often comes with the tool.

Scissors for manicure

Manicure scissors are one of the most commonly used manicure tools, and therefore dull the fastest. Especially when, instead of nails or cuticles, it is tempting to cut some thread with them. 

To cut the cuticles, I advise you to get a separate pair of scissors. It is important that these scissors are not too hard or thick. Cuticle scissors should be thin pointed ends because a tiny blade is required for accurate results. If the tool is not sharp, you will not make accurate cuts and are more likely to tear your cuticles, leave jagged edges, or injure yourself.

Because scissors have moving parts, they will need to be lubricated from time to time to keep them from becoming stiff.

Tweezers for manicure

Tweezers are great for picking up small neil art items like rhinestones and foil. Make sure they are kept clean and free from any glue particles etc.

If your tools show signs of rust, they have lost their original appearance or do not perform well, it's time to throw them away. Do not attempt to use such tools, as this will not only ruin the look of your manicure, but may also be hazardous to your health.
